On an acre that is easy. On a quarter-acre lot in Middleburg or Callahan it decides where the well goes, where the drain field goes, and whether a replacement of either one is even possible without moving the other.

How often does a septic tank need pumping around Jacksonville?
Most households land between three and five years. Tank size, how many people live in the house and whether a garbage disposal is in daily use move that number more than anything else. The honest answer comes from measuring the sludge and scum layers with the lid off.
How far does a well have to be from a septic system in Florida?
At least 75 feet for a private drinking well and 50 feet for an irrigation well, measured to the nearest part of the system. On a small lot that number decides where everything goes.
Who issues the well permit?
It depends on the county. The City of Jacksonville in Duval; the county health department in St. Johns, Clay, Nassau, Putnam, Baker and Volusia. Every county is set out on the permits page.
